So as you might have noticed from my last post, we got to asked for help by Apex Bex, an old friend dating way back to my noobish carebear days. Of course I choose to come, even though my account is likely to drop fairly soon (RL job hunt took a few months to long) and while I will be back on, and will keep up blogging, general depression / EvE ennui has more or less limited my time in EvE.
It’s always nice when folks hand you an opportunity to go in and shoot big stuff. So I move to Mai, with a Domi and a Zealot, and wait. Shenanigans take place on comms, then Sev pushes the timetable up and the non Sev FC kicks off the ball with small stuff. A loki is popped as are several smaller ships. Much skirmishing takes place and the expected caps are dropped. MASSIVE firefight. LOTS of pewpews. My Domi shoots its guns dry (kids always check to make sure you brought ammo BEFORE you travel 6 jumps) but I have drones, a TD, and a point, my ship is fully insured and its a freaking gank Domi. Who cares if it dies.
At this point comms starts blowing up.
Local starts blowing up.
Apparently we had 2 “blue” fleets who consisted largely of people not blue to each other. In fact we had some militia folks from both factions wandering around and I’m pretty sure that they were in both fleets. Our side was split between two fleets adding even more confusion, and blues weren’t coordinated beforehand. Result? Well Volition Cult DIDN’T shoot me down, though I was tackled for a while. Plenty of folks reported being shot at or even shot down by blues, although the losses haven’t made the killboards yet, and you could see clouds of jamming drones and hear reports of jamming over voice between blues.
Personally I had fun. I helped out a friend (some, the POS got destroyed but the POCOs didn’t) and jumped in on a bunch of easy capship killmails and saw a “Learning Experience” for a lot of people. ZGG has friends, and they aren’t afraid to bring them in. They wouldn’t be enough to hold out against PL, or TEST or the AAA-class alliances, but a bit player that comes knocking will find that their Rolodex has a lot of people filed under P for PAIN. Xx Space Odyssee xX just learned that gathering intel saves ships. This has happened to Apex before, and likely will happen again. On the “friendly” side, either make sure all blues are actually set, or do it right and get everyone in one big fleet. Ideally the latter. That way if there’s friendly fire you know someone is a tool who can’t set up his overview.
Note: So far there’s no “Bluefire” kills on http://eve-kill.net/?a=kill_related&kll_id=14077869 but there was a lot of close calls, and a lot of jamming going around.

What appears to have happened is a bunch of Renters decided that one carrier in a plex is not enough. 6 is about right. Apparently they were either botting with the worst software ever or AFK plexing. At some point a red comes in local. In an Onyx. This doesn’t IMMEDIATELY trigger everyone to run away somehow. Maybe they thought it would be a covops hotdrop, maybe they were using terrible botting software, maybe they were just stupid. Me, I always bet on stupid.
Onyx lands, bubble, cyno, supercarriers, lulz. Thats what I’m guessing anyway. I may have my mechanics messed up, I may just be wrong, still WOW were these guys caught with their pants down.
Final tally, 6 carriers and 6 pods. Ouch. I’m gonna run down the things that went wrong here.
- Ratting with Carriers – I’m not completely against this, it makes a lot of money and if you do it right it can be very safe as well as profitable. If you do it right, which brings me to:
- Do it in a cynojammed system. Jump Bridge to your safe system and FFS make sure the jammer is up. It’s hard to get hotdropped when they can’t open a cyno.
- Red in local? DOCK UP! PvE ship vs. PvP ship = dead PvE ships every time.
- Not having your full attention on the game outside of hisec. This gets you killed.
Now let’s look at outcomes
- -6 Carriers. I don’t care who you are, that hurts. Add in the pods which presumably have some implants in them and you are out well over 6 billion, maybe even 7.
- Stirring up activity. They know someone likes to rat there now. Think they might be looking for a repeat performance later? My old alliance called this “Chumming the water” if you throw bloody meat into the water, you get sharks. Those sharks are probably gonna be in the area for a while.
- Depriving your corp/alliance of valuable assets. A golem has no place in the pvp assets of your alliance. Trust me. A carrier does. In fact carriers should be getting more valuable after the incoming nerf. Now if you have to defend your space, you just made it a lot harder.
- Finally, these guys were all in one corp. If I were running their alliance they’d be gone. If I were running that corp they’d be gone (except one of them is the CEO) Shenanigans like this can cause all kinds of problems, mostly because they are easily preventable and because they REALLY hurt.
POS timers are great. Nothing in EvE sets a more predictable fight than a POS reinforcement timer. Everyone knows when the fight will be. What will be involved. Its like the opening of a Chess game… if the board was 4 squares wide and all the pieces pawns. There’s only so many moves you can do.
Recently my alliance has been helping some friends with a wardec that has led to a wormhole siege. We went through the predictable opening moves, staging tower, reinforce one of their towers, try to lure out the caps. Due to poor time zone coverage they reinforced our tower while we were asleep. With a dread. In a wormhole too small to squeeze caps in.
So we all log on to vent when the timer counts to zero, logged out at safespots. For a while the hostiles are simply moving ships from one tower to another. Then the calls start coming “Scorp Navy Issue, Cerb, Phoenix, and two hounds heading to the tower,” I log in my Curse and align to our tower. Apparently all of us logging in at once spooked them, for they started bugging out and fast. Except the Phoenix who was already in siege mode. No one was in position to get a warpin so I warped to the POS, which was not bubbled, MWD’d over to the Phoenix and started neuting the crap out of it. For a moment it looks like his cap is going to hold. Then, as DPS continues to warp in and do damage and he is forced to use his Shield Booster more and more his cap crumbles, and with it, his tank. From the time I warped in and started neuting to the time he popped was less than ten minutes.
On an entirely personal note: I hate Citadel Torps due to the massive blinding explosions and hope they all die in embarrassing fashion. Very useful ship, Nasty damage. Annoying graphics.
Frankly this was more an execution than a kill. They came it fat and stupid and were lucky they didn’t lose a lot more. We know they have two Chimeras in the wormhole, and while we have some interlopers from Purple Helmeted Warriors trying to crowd in, there is much treasure and tears to be had!
[EDIT] Replaced dead link with movie link. [/edit]
So I hop on for my alliances weekly meeting. Its been a rough week. We have had a lot of stupid losses, some non-participation by key players, myself included, short tempers, some folks going through some REAL tough times in real life. Just a Piss-poor week by all accounts.
One of our WH spies reports that our hostiles Archon is on the WH in scram range. Why do people do this? Its a bad idea. The carrier can’t get OUT but the hostiles can… easily. So we start organizing a fleet. I start beating the drums with friendlies, no dice. I call PK, no dice (he wanted to but 30j is a long way for a lone carrier)
We get a fleet together. Drake, Domi, Rapier, Prot (cloakey hidey fit) Falcon, Rapier, Pilgrim, Jag, Ishtar, Blackbird, Onieros. I know. Its awful. Its terrible. We went for it. D-scan showed a damnation, two drakes, a Thorax and some stealth bombers wandering about.
Drake warped onto the bubble they had erected on the WH, called point, in come the stampeding herd.
THERE WAS A FIREFIGHT!!!!
We killed the Thorax, podded him, A drake, a Nighthawk warped in, he went down, a kitsune and a manti were next, then another drake. We were getting hit by bombs. Including lockbreakers. Too bad there were two recons holding points. Our blackbird went down early, that pilot switched to a pilgrim. The domi swapped to a Hyperion, the Proteus said fuck that I’ll get in the Domi.
The Archon’s cap was holding, so we started DPSing. Pretty slow since we couldn’t really hit him with drones. We noticed he wasn’t repping. My scanner showed a rep on him. DPS, DPS, DPS, finally he dips into structure. No reps. Scan again. WTF is he doing? He hits low structure and BOOM!
What. The. Fuck.
Guardian warps in. Literally seconds after the carrier goes down. He dies in seconds too.
We kill the pods. Scoop the loot. Exit the area and get back into Empire.
We needed this. We needed this BAD. This is the kind of thing that takes a small alliance and galvanizes it.
Ok I’m going to try to get to sleep. Video should be up tomorrow.
