What makes you so great?
Ran across two great Wayne Gretzky quotes today. One I’d heard before, one I hadn’t. The old one is “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take,” In other words its on you to seize opportunities, if you don’t act on something, its as if you never knew it to begin with. This doesn’t mean be imprudent, because some opportunities have big teeth, but don’t let opportunities slip by because you are worried about the possibility of failure.
The other quote is “A good hockey player plays where the puck is. A great hockey player plays where the puck is going to be,” great quote in EvE. I believe that every single ship loss in EvE is preventable. Every. Single. One. a good player loses ships because he makes mistakes, he goes places where he doesn’t know the territory, who lives there, or what they might do. A great player goes places knowing not only all this information, but how he’s going to respond to it.
For example a few nights ago we had reports of an inbound roam. 1 logistics, bunch of shield BCs, and a faction cruiser. We reshipped into armor ships and waited on a gate. We also got a carrier undocked and ready. Bad guys came in, attacked our bait, our ECM started jamming them, our bait lit the cyno, carrier comes in. Our DPS was arleady higher than theirs and they immediately started to run. We only managed to kill one of them (DRAT!) due to our low speed, however we did collect some sweet, delicious tears.
Now I’m not saying I’m flawless, both sides made mistakes, however ours were far more excusable given time and numbers, we picked larger, tougher, slower ships, our opponent went into an area he didn’t know much about without a good plan in case things went to hell. A carrier on a gate in lowsec is extremely vulnerable and rather predictable when you roam into occupied space. By not preparing for such an eventuality he not only guaranteed his fleet losing a fight if one showed up, but he robbed them of the opportunity to kill one if one appeared. We had a plan if we got counter-dropped, and it was better than BURN AWAY!
EvE fleets run the gamut between 2 people and thousands. Every one has a goal, a mission to accomplish and some of them are very simple, well-researched and quite easy to plan for. Most PvE activities (other than incursions) fall into this category. When things break script, either in Wormholes, Incursions, or practically any PvP, a good FC can go with the flow and keep on top of things. A Great FC is already 5 steps ahead moving on to the next part of his plan.
