Blog Banter 37: Shredding the Fabric

“EVE Online sits on the frontier of social gaming, providing an entertainment environment like no other. The vibrant society of interacting and conflicting communities, both within the EVE client and without, is the driving force behind EVE’s success. However, the anonymity of internet culture combined with a competitive gaming environment encourages in-game behaviour to spread beyond the confines of the sandbox. Where is the line?”

I’ve already commented on this to some extent.  The John Gabriel Internet Dickwad Theory isn’t news to anyone.  Honestly I think everyone draws the line themself, and like in EvE it’s a pretty easy to understand system.  If you put yourself on a platform, not everyone is going to cheer.  I moderate my comments but only to weed out spam.  Even the most trollish of asshat comments get in as long as they aren’t for penis pills.  I say my say and I want and expect people to say theirs here.  Same goes for forums, official or not, and generally the same rules apply as in EvE.  Don’t let your ego write checks your body can’t cash.

Rumors have it that things have gone too far for some, with a DDoS attack alleged by the CEO of White Rose Convecticle, Yuki Onna.  Here’s a hint, if you are committing an actual crime you’ve crossed a line that I don’t think anyone should *really* need to be told not to cross.  The simple answer, the logical answer, would be to say that within legal confines you draw the line you want to hold within the confines of law.  Decent behavior is clearly beyond some people, and by playing EvE you expose yourself to a certain level of “antisocial” behavior.  Antisocial doesn’t mean illegal.

EvE is too hotly contested a game to just say “Be Excellent to Each other” but any action that is an attack on the person not the character has gone too far.  Keep it in the game, keep it to where people are posting in or about EvE.  Don’t take it to their person, their stuff, let alone their family.  You don’t see people going to Fanfest and starting fistfights, over EvE, why would you attack someone’s shit out of game just because you aren’t in their face?

Finding Good PvP

PvP in EvE is a nervous mistress.  Unless you want to Leee-roy yourself and maybe your friends into a blob you have to take some time to set things up, find a fight worth fighting, and score the actual kills.  Fancy Hats deals with this a couple of different ways.

  1. Can Flipping.  Might be amateurish but somehow carebear tears are the best tears.  Pickings are getting thin though as mostly miners have wised up or gotten out.
  2. Wardecs.  Incredibly pointless these days with CCPs changes to the system.  The joke from Monty Python may be “Come and see the violence inherent in the system,”  Joke is on the people doing violence now.
  3. Lowsec roams.  Doable in small gangs these days.  More and more people are devoting more and more time to incursions.  Some fights end up being ambushes or whelps, and mostly you get blueballed.
  4. WH yarring.  This one is growing on me.  I am not a big fan of blind man’s bluff.  Das Boot is more fun to watch than to act out, but as a total R&K fanboy I will admit that the new video has made me more willing to do it, and god knows that I’ve spent enough time bailing friends out.

Today I had a fun little fight.  Not greatly satisfying as I broke all kinds of rules to get it but meh.  I flipped a can in Tunttaras from a guy with 5 or so friends in local.  Normally I am very careful to NOT do that, but it’s been a while.  I move to about 30 or 40 km off the can and orbit moving fast in my navy slicer.  I love lasers, and small and fast is the way to go for canflipping.

I wait for a few minutes, doing BC checks on the guys in local old enough to scare me.  Finally after several minutes a Ferox comes in and puts drones out.  He locks me and sits there.  After a couple more minutes a Kestrel comes in and does the same.  I know these guys are talking it up in corp, trying to come up with a good plan.  Timer is counting down, so I set a tight orbit, lock up the drones and both ships.  Yay for 4 targeting slots.

FINALLY the drones attack and the Ferox goes red.  Nos on him, point on him, start chopping at drones.  Tracking is kinda fail but I’m still killing them.  Get to about 2/3 armor before he runs out of drones and the Nos is keeping my cap happy even though the Ferox is Nossing me.  The kestrel went red at some point, he did not like my L4ZORS!!!  Then I turned to the Ferox.

I like the Ferox.  It is a very tough, capable ship that gets a terrible reputation because it is not easy to use well.  It is not a particularly forgiving ship for low-skilled toons though.  I suspect that my victim was not highly skilled, and even though his fit wasn’t terrible other than the railguns, it was not suitable for the task at hand, nor up to the challenge.  His tank was stubborn, but quickly overwhelmed, and his inability to harm me made the conclusion forgone unless his friends came to help.  They did not and his ship disappeared in a brilliant blue explosion.  Melios offered a pithy comment about the inferiority of highsec PvP and my lack of nobility.  I made reference to the fact that I am the CEO of the Fancy Hats corporation.  Nobility is a bit much to expect from me.

It was a somewhat satisfying fight.  Melios and his friends could have blobbed me, and killing a sturdily built ship offers some satisfaction.  All in all fun was had, and by me.

A New Toy

So I saw the patch notes for the next EvE Patch and decided to fiddle around with a Daredevil because I’ve always liked the ship.  Rails were the first T2 guns I ever had so I went with a slightly unorthodox fit just for the lulz value.

[Daredevil, AB Rail Daredevil]

2x 150mm Railgun II (Spike S)

Fleeting Propulsion Inhibitor I
Faint Warp Disruptor I
Gistii B-Type 1MN MicroWarpdrive

2x Overdrive Injector System II
Damage Control II
Magnetic Field Stabilizer II

Small Hybrid Locus Coordinator I
2x Small Polycarbon Engine Housing I

It Turns Heads

Not a dominating fit at all. 178 DPS at 10,350+10,800, 4715 m/s but a BLAST to fly.

Speed tank of around 4000 m/s as I orbit at 14km and pound the bad guys with railgun DEATH.  I had a lot of fun with it tonight.  Got bored earlier, and pissed at a corpmate so I hopping in a thrasher and ganked the first retriever I came across.

Then I went afk for a while, came back, noticed our alliance was short a corp and our fail wartargets were back to hugging stations after a good job beating the CRAP out of our guys last night to the tune of two Domis and an Armageddon Navy issue.  Still haven’t gotten the full report on that but yeah, not happy.  I drop into Palas, where I think I have never been before.  I ignore the bait Abaddon and find a Covetor in a belt.  Now I hate can-mining.  It’s a bad practice to use for making money, it draws attention from bad people (like me) and it doesn’t make that much money in the first place.  If you are looking for a “How to can-mine” guide let me set you straight.  Go to , and start missioning.  You will thank me later, TRUST ME.

Anyway I flip his can, and get my orbit way out at a distance, he pulls his drones and warps off.  Le Sigh.  Orbit the cans for a while.  He comes back in a drake.  I’m in a rail fit Drake, looking at his toon.  Young.  Two months old.  Flies a covetor.  The Drake can’t be that good, lets try it out.  He starts shooting me with heavies.  Hurt a decent amount with my speed tank.  Signature bloom is a bitch I guess.  Even with my speed my shields were dropping more than I’d like.  Then I look at his shields.  Wow.  I still had to reload once to take him down, but I blew past his peak recharge like it wasn’t there.  Serious surprise.  He blows up, we trade GFs, I almost catch him coming back in his covetor.  I post the killmail.

WT Everloving F.

Again for new EvE players trying to figure out how to fit a Drake.  Don’t do that.  Fill the slots.  For the love of GOD.  So I head on out and about, finally ending up in a belt with a Retriever, a bunch of guys in the ret’s corp, and a million shuttles in the belt.  Looked like some attempt to game the rules somewhere.  I couldn’t figure out how but meh, drop shuttles off overview and flip.  He whines in local, his corpies respond in local, they all shut up for a while, finally the Retriever aggros.  Boom.  He warps off, comes back in a Cormorant, Boom.  Cormorant was actually tough, but the AC guns couldn’t reach me so I slowed down to get better tracking and he dropped like a fat kid running a marathon.

The Ret/Cormie pilot whined about me using cheat codes as my shields never even flinched against him.  *Sigh*  Knowledge is the most valuable commodity in EvE.  Understanding mechanics will save ships.  Failing to understand will cause rage and tears.

What about Major Kong?
